NEWBOLD MOOR MAN FALLS AT LOOSPrivate Robert C Newton, who joined the 11th Notts and Derbys in September of last year, met with a soldier’s death at the commencement of the great movement on September 25th, being the first to fall in his company in the attack on the German Trenches. His parents, Mr and Mrs Robert Newton of Sanforth St, Whittington Moor, received official news of their great loss on October 2nd. Private Newton who was the second son, was 24 years of age. He was of a quiet unassuming character and was respected by all who knew him, especially by his fellow workmen of the Sheepbridge Co’s iron foundry, at which works he was employed up to to the time of enlistment. The following is a copy of a letter from his regimental major giving the information of his death:- Sir, I very much regret having to inform you that Pte. Newton, of this Company, was killed in action on the 24th inst. He was the first man of the company to be killed. I am indeed very sorry to lose him.
